Even though teachers and students often have the same goal, there is usually a disconnect between them. Teachers try their hardest to make sure their students understand the information, but that doesn’t mean students are always happy. Students often get bored, frustrated or overwhelmed. And this is where the barrier comes in.
There are many things teachers feel about you, as a student, that they often don’t share. So I will share a few of them with you. Hopefully, this will help you have a more positive view about school, your teacher, and your education. So, here they are:
1. We Genuinely Care About You
I’ve spoken to many teachers who lose sleep at night because they worry about their students. They don’t usually worry about what your next English essay mark will be. They worry about you: your future, your self-being, and your life. Not only do we want students to succeed in our classroom, but we want our students to succeed in every aspect of their life. So, when we see an intelligent student giving up, we worry, and we lose sleep. We only want the best for you, and we want to help you get there in any way we can.
2. We Want to Hear From You
Even if you completely disagree with me, I still want to hear what you think. We want to connect with every student on some sort of level. We want to make sure we create a relationship with every student so that every student feels like they are heard, accepted, and can come to us if they need help with something. You don’t have to agree with everything I say, and that’s okay! But I still want to hear what you think. I want to know what’s going on in your life. I want to know where you are having troubles.
3. We Respect You
This one may seem odd because it doesn’t always seem like teachers respect you. But we know that every student must be treated with respect – regardless of how they treat us. Most teachers won’t accept disrespectful behaviour from a student, but they will still treat the student with respect. We will treat you with even more respect when you, in turn, respect us. We respect that learning English is very difficult, and we show you respect by being patient, understanding and helpful. We appreciate that everybody learns differently, and everybody makes mistakes, therefore we never expect perfection from you.
4. We’re Always Learning & Looking to Improve
Even though you’re the one learning English, and we happen to be professionals on the matter, that doesn’t mean we’re not learning. We learn new things every day, and we’re excited to share it with you. And, teachers are constantly looking to improve their teaching methods. We’re always looking for new and exciting ways to draw their students in and try to make learning fun. That being said, if you can think of a fun way to improve classes, let us know! We may not always take your suggestion, but we are more than willing to listen.
